Rio de Janeiro, also known as Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvelous City), was recently named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

There is no shortage of attractions to understand why the city of Rio de Janeiro is truly wonderful. Privileged geography—the beaches, mountains and lagoons combine and coexist to afford stunning views, known worldwide. Life in Brazil's second metropolis so pretty. Christ the Redeemer (elected Eighth Wonder of the World), Sugar Loaf, and a coastline with miles of beaches, including the famous Copacabana and Ipanema. Barra da Tijuca, the district hosting ICM 2018, features its own beach, state parks and a wealth of restaurants and cultural attractions.

The joy of the Carioca (a person born in or who has adopted Rio de Janeiro as a city to live) is contagious, whether walking along the beach, playing volleyball or footvolley on the sands, kitesurfing, hang gliding, or kicking back at a sidewalk table outside a bar. The weather in August is mild, and temperatures pleasant. Rio is the birthplace of samba and bossa nova and today offers a rich blend of rhythms with various influences. Infrastructure

The city has a track record of political and scientific conventions and major sporting events, including the 2014 FIFA Football World Cup, the 2016 Summer Olympics and the Rio+20 United Nations Conference, in 2012. Transportation and lodging around conference venue Riocentro have received a big boost in order to host these events.

How to get to Rio de Janeiro

Conference venue Riocentro is 32 km away from Galeão–Antônio Carlos Jobim International Airport (GIG) and 35km away from the Santos Dumont Airport (SDU) There are more than 300 weekly direct flights between Rio and foreign cities. Rio is a must on the itinerary of all who visit Brazil.

Beyond the exuberant natural surroundings, you'll have the opportunity to visit museums, cultural centers and historical buildings, as well as enjoying the performing arts and shopping. Major musical and theatrical productions are always running, as well as the latest movies. By day or by night, Rio de Janeiro offers a wide variety of shopping malls, restaurants and tourist attractions. Food

In Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian cuisine is well represented with several regional specialty restaurants. Transportation

The main forms of public transportation in Rio are metro underground trains, buses, and the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system. There are bus and BRT stops close to ICM venue RioCentro. Yellow cabs are a cost effective transportation option for groups of people. Rio also has a bike sharing system.

The wonders of Rio de Janeiro go beyond the city

If you have time and interest, there are many other attractions near Rio de Janeiro. Neighboring towns a few kilometers away offer myriad options for sightseeing. Some highlights:  Petropolis, Teresopolis and Itaipava are cities in the mountains within reach. And try Buzios, Ilha Grande or Paraty to enjoy idyllic beaches and pleasant surroundings.

Each region has its own characteristics and peculiarities. The country is large and so the weather and food vary much more than you might expect.

North region

The major reference of this region is the Amazon, with its jungle and the largest tropical forest in the world. The city of Belém in the state of Pará is rich in history and cultural attractions, such as the island of Marajó.

Northeast region

Considered one of the most festive parts of the country, Brazil's Nordeste exudes joy and hospitality. Besides unspoiled beaches, a wide range of cultural and historical manifestations can be found in the cities of Salvador, Fortaleza, Natal, João Pessoa and Recife.

Central-west region

The region of Brazil's capital Brasilia, which was founded in 1960 and is much visited and appreciated for its award-winning architecture. In the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul you can explore a sanctuary of unique biodiversity with a variety of nature and adventure activities.

Southeast region

The region where ICM 2018 takes place is in the most cosmopolitan region of the country, where both Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are located.  The Sudeste (Southeast Region) also covers the states of Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais – famous for its historical cities such as Ouro Preto, Diamantina and Tiradentes.

South region

The triple Brazil-Paraguay-Argentina frontier is located in the city of Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná state. The Iguazu Falls are impressive in terms of beauty, as are the charming cities of Gramado and Canela, in the Serra Gaúcha, and the beautiful beaches of Florianópolis, in the state of Santa Catarina.
